“ Why I Did the Keto Diet Instead of Weight Loss Surgery ”

My name is Geneviève Vachon (@ genevieve.gensocial), and I am 36 years old. I am from Sudbury, Ontario, and I am a social media manager. Instead of having weight loss surgery, I committed to the keto diet and macro tracking and train with TeamBodyProject to lose 84 pounds.

I have struggled to be overweight from a young age. By the time I hit the age of 18, I already weighed 270 pounds. So I took control of my life and started a weight loss journey.

In a year and a half, I lost 110 pounds through regular exercise and calorie counting. I managed to keep the weight off for many years until I decided to quit smoking at age 24. At the same time, I also suffered from depression and anxiety. In one year, I gained over 100 pounds due to overeating.

Over the next decade I tried everything to lose weight again. From Weight Watchers to a low-carb diet, each diet would only last a few days (or, at most, a month or two). None of my attempts were successful.

At the start of 2020, I weighed 315 pounds and faced so many health issues related to my weight.

These problems included back pain and body aches every morning, joint pain, acne, lack of energy and worsening asthma. I was a stay-at-home mom of two and taking care of myself was hardly a priority. Even though my personal care has been put aside for so long, weight loss and getting back into shape have always been on my mind.

I asked my doctor for a recommendation for weight loss surgery. My doctor thought I was a great candidate. In March 2020, I had my first orientation meeting at the hospital, which really opened my eyes. There were many aspects of weight loss surgery that I had no idea about. After orientation, I had to do five meetings with five different professionals. I met a nurse, a social worker, a physiotherapist, a pharmacist and a dietitian.

After each meeting, I got more and more nervous and scared. The weight loss surgery meant so many physical changes in my body and included so many dietary restrictions. I would never be able to enjoy a coffee again, and a glass of wine was also something that was going to be strictly limited. My husband and I love to entertain, and we love to enjoy food and wine together. He was as tired as I was. Weight loss surgery was going to change our lives, and I wasn’t sure if I was ready for it.

I told my best friend about all my fears. She had been on the keto diet for four years and suggested that I try

We thought keto might be a last resort before life-changing surgery. I never thought in a million years that keto would work for me. I love sweets, bread and pasta. But I came home one night and thought about it. What did I have to lose? I was terrified of having the weight loss surgery.

In June 2020, I decided to give the keto diet a try … and it totally worked for me.

It works for me because I’m a full-fledged foodie and haven’t had to give up my passion for cooking and tasting delicious food. I have found some healthy low carb bread and wrappers that I use on a daily basis. I am able to whip up some delicious keto treats, which have been a lifesaver, especially while on vacation. Cold cuts and dips have always been a favorite of mine and I have been able to continue to enjoy them.

And it’s easy to modify my meal by cooking for the whole family. A quick swap of rice for cauliflower rice or zucchini noodles for pasta works for me.

Here’s what I eat in a day on the keto diet.

  • Breakfast: Natural peanut butter and GoodGood keto-friendly Sweet strawberry jam at Dimpflmeier Bakery Power Slice bread.
  • Lunch: 3 oz salmon on a Greek salad with kale, arugula, cucumber, feta and Renee’s Feta Greek dressing.
  • Snacks: Sugar-free keto bombs (the peanut butter and mint ones are my favorite), pepperettes, or keto dessert like PB Cookies and Fat Snax. I have a Keto Krate subscription which is an amazing way to try new keto snacks.
  • Having dinner: Chicken breast stuffed with broccoli and cheese served over cauliflower rice, sautéed with spinach and avocado oil.
  • Dessert: Keto Cheesecake topped with Raspberries.

I started training regularly three months after starting my weight loss journey.

I didn’t start exercising right away. Exercising at my heaviest was extremely difficult. I was getting short of breath very quickly and the muscle pain lasted for a week.

Three months later, I started with seven-minute HIIT workouts on the Organic Fit app. I decided I wanted more cardio and switched to low impact workouts on Youtube via TeamBodyProject.

I fell in love with these workouts. They are tough, low impact, and easy to follow. I am the least coordinated person and I can keep up! After working for over three months using the free Youtube videos, I decided to pay a website membership for a wider variety of videos and workout routines.

I constantly follow these programs five days a week for 30 to 40 minutes. I also walk three days a week for 30 to 60 minutes.

These three changes made the biggest difference in my weight loss results.

    1. I started to follow macros. Since starting Keto, I downloaded the Carb Manager application and follow my macros daily. Tracking my macros helps me monitor the ratios of carbohydrates, fat, and protein that I am consuming. Food tracking also helped me better understand portion sizes and portion sizes.
    2. I started to eat more food at home. Fast food was a problem for me. I would buy fast food five times a week. Since going keto, I plan my meals at the start of each day, cook more meals at home, and pack my food and snacks when visiting friends. At first, I felt uncomfortable bringing my own low carb snacks to a friend’s house. Now my friends and family are used to the fact that I usually show up prepared with my own snacks. Thinking about the future ensures that I don’t go without food for too long, which could lead to overeating later in the day. It also allows me to eat with the other members of the group.
    3. I found the exercise that worked for me. New months ago I was getting short of breath walking slowly down the street and could barely keep up with a bike ride with the family. I looked at the exercise as a punishment and I dreaded every minute of it because it was difficult. But I found a job that I absolutely adore *. * It has a low impact, is easy to follow, and the facilitators are extremely motivating. After six consecutive months of training, I can’t wait to move my body! I look forward to the feeling of accomplishment and strength. I look forward to the changes I am seeing in my body and in my overall health. And my kids join me for my training every day. I’m finally setting a good example for them, and that means a lot to me.

I lost 84 pounds in nine months.

There are still times when I feel discouraged, overeat, fluctuate in weight, hit plateaus, don’t work out regularly, don’t drink enough water, or generally feel like I’ve blocked my progress. time is that I understand that this trip has no final destination. I am committed to improving myself.

I made a lifelong promise. After a day out of the routine or a day of cheating, I wake up and start making healthy choices again the next day without shame or guilt.
