Greek scientists seek to name heatwaves in line with storms, World News

Troubled by rising temperatures, calls for naming heat waves are growing among scientists in Greece.

Scientists across the country have started discussing the need to name and classify heat waves. They are best known for their invisibility.

Widespread forest fires, triggered by heat waves, have highlighted the realities of the climate crisis.

This decision could serve as a preventive measure to enable policy makers and affected populations to prepare for “silent killer” heat waves.

Since June, Greece has experienced two episodes of extreme heat. Both were exceptionally long and intense.

A further rise in temperatures last week saw Athens fall victim to fires again as devastating fires broke out northwest of the capital.

Dr Kostas Lagouvardos, director of research at the National Observatory in Athens, told the Observer: “It is clear that the extreme heat has been underestimated”.

It is essential that people are aware of the dangers this poses. “We believe people will be better prepared to deal with an upcoming weather event when the event has a name. They will become more aware of the possible problems this could cause to their life and their properties… heat waves kill a lot; they don’t make noise and may not be visible, but they are silent killers, ”Lagouvardos said.
